MONSON CEMETERY COMMISSION
FRIDAY, MAY 6, 2005
The regular meeting of the Monson Cemetery Commissioners convened at 8:30 a.m. in the office at 32 Wilbraham Road. In attendance were Robert E. Pease, Julian E. Szarlan, Albert T. Wilcox, Paul B. Lovell, John R. Nothe and Gaylin G. Bingle.
The meeting minutes of April 1, 2005 were read by the Recording Secretary and accepted with a motion by Mr. Szarlan and seconded by Mr. Pease.
Mr. Pease made a motion to reorganize the Board as follows:
Chairman: Julian E. Szarlan
Vice Chairman: Albert T. Wilcox
Member: Robert E. Pease
Mr. Szarlan seconded the motion.
OLD BUSINESS:
1. Snow on Roof of Building – Mr. Wilcox said he has spoken with Brian Mushenko and Whippie of Whip’s construction. They have both agreed to speak with Paul to explain what can be done and to give quotes on the cost. The Commissioners agreed unanimously to have the problem of the snow sliding off of the roof corrected.
2. Transmission on Truck – Paul said the transmission pan needed to be replaced. This cost $150.00 and is all set.
3. Senior Center – Paul said he spoke with Judy White after looking at the bushes she wanted removed for the Memorial Garden gazebo/arbor and explained the Cemetery backhoe is too small to handle a job that big. The Highway Department was able to do this for them.
NEW BUSINESS:
1. Request for Transfer – The Cemetery Commissioners signed a letter requesting a transfer of $500.00 from the Gifts and Bequest Interest Account to the Cemetery Expense Account, as the department was running low on allocated funds for the current fiscal year.
2. Stone Wall at Hillside – Mr. Pease and John noticed a crack in the stonewall on the Main Street side in Hillside Cemetery by the telephone poles in Section F, and added it doesn’t look as though that portion of the wall would last much longer. Mr. Szarlan suggested applying for a grant to help with the cost and feels it will cost more then the grant will provide. Paul said there is another bad spot in the stonewall across from Hillside School on Thompson Street. That portion of the wall is bowed out quite badly. Paul said he has submitted the repairing of the stonewall as a Capital request. The Commissioners agreed to have John work on a grant from
Norcross Wildlife Sanctuary, as he has good writing skills. John said he doesn’t have the time now to devote to working on a grant and that this would have to be a winter project. Paul said there is granite behind the wall, so this will not be an easy project. John suggested the tree should be removed also, as he feels the roots could be pushing on the wall. Mr. Szarlan said he knows Jim Finnegan and will speak with him about receiving a quote so the department will know roughly what a project like this would cost. Mr. Szarlan will also speak with his niece to find out about other grants we might possibly be able to apply for as well. The Commissioners agreed to have John follow up by calling Norcross Wildlife Sanctuary to explain the problem and to receive information on their grant program and to just submit the application.
3. Raise for Paul – Mr. Wilcox made a motion to have Mr. Szarlan speak with Gretchen to find out what could be done and how to go about getting Paul classified as a Grade 3. Mr. Pease seconded the motion.
At 9:32 a.m. Mr. Szarlan made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Mr. Pease seconded the motion.
Respectfully Submitted,
Gaylin Bingle
